 Here is a neat little debug command for Checkpoint.

fw ctl zdebug drop | grep 10.1.1.1

syslog-ng on cygwin

I am developing some PERL scripts for OMNIbus/Netcool at work.  Because my company restricts freedom and discourages innovation, we are stuck on Microsoft.  Luckily they haven't locked us down to the point where we can not install new software.   So I've become a big fan of Cygwin.  I've never used heroin, but I suspect my use of Cygwin is much like an addict's use of Methadone.  It keeps me alive, just barely. Anyway, this piece of knowledge was not the most straightforward piece to find, or I'm just an idiot (not that those are mutually exclusive.)  However on the winblows box, syslong-ng runs under Cygwin and even sets itself up as a service which is cool. Side Note:  if you want to upgrade Cygwin and are getting file in use problems and are running syslog-ng, you probably need to shutdown the service during upgrades. Sun Java memory fun with logstash

I am working on a distributed logstash deployment in AWS. I'm using the Elasticcache-Redis provided by AWS as the store between the syslog receiver and the elasticcache writer (aka the worker). I keep getting OOM errors on the worker like this {:timestamp=>"2013-10-22T08:18:58.592000+0000", :message=>"Failed to flush outgoing items", :outgoing_count=>34, :exception=>java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space, :backtrace=>[], :level=>:warn} I was aware of the ability to change the heapsize allocated to the jvm, but wasn't sure how to find it.  Luckily google helped.  I took the command line I was using to run elasticsearch and compared how the 3 settings affected the defaults java -Xms512m -Xmx512m -Xss256k -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -version > /tmp/1 java -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -version > /tmp/2 diff /tmp/1 That helped me figure out which default settings were important. Xubuntu on an HP z420

This is my primary work computer. I recently decided to switch from Fedora to Xubuntu. I still like Fedora, but we are using more Ubuntu at work and I need to get myself more familiar with that way of doing things. I am copying a lot of the configuration that I did with my Sager NP9758 laptop configuration. After updating an rebooting, I enabled the Nvidia binary drivers and Intel binary blob.
